In November 2012, in collaboration with Third Ear, I presented The Voice and the Lens at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; a festival and exhibition exploring the treasures of the human voice, as conjured for the eyes through film and performance.
At the heart of The Voice and the Lens was an exhibition of established and emerging artist film-makers, brought together with leading vocal performers to wrestle over the relationship between the voice and the camera. Newly commissioned work by artists included Bruce McLean, Jayne Parker, Imogen Stidworthy, Sam Belinfante and Amy Cunningham was shown with contributions from vocalists including Adam de la Cour, Elaine Mitchener and Loré Lixenberg, plus Birmingham Institute of Art & Design and Birmingham Conservatoire. Also works by Sam Taylor-Wood, Kathryn Faulkner, Yiannis Katsaris and Mikhail Karikis.
Alongside the exihibition was an ambitious program of performances and screenings, including work by; Elizabeth Price, Christian Marclay, Ed Atkins, Anri Sala, Kurt Schwitters, Alvin Lucier, Yoko Ono, Robert Altman, Jean-Luc Godard, Helen Petts, David Toop, Jennifer Walshe, Mikhail Karikis and Eric Whitacre.
